caught in the rain

Posted by: samiam, April 30, 2009 in 4:07 pm

I was taking a walk with my 5 month old daughter when out of nowhere it started to drizzle.  The sky wasn’t even cloudy when I left my house.  Or at least I didn’t notice.  Either way, I was caught in a down pour without a plastic cover for my stroller.  No umbrella.  Not even a jacket I could drape over her!  I waited under a store awning for awhile but then had to get home because our plumber was coming (that’s another story).  I started walking briskly home- as the rain drops landed on my daughter, she didn’t even seem to mind.  We got to my building and ran into another mother in my foyer.  She gasped, “She’s drenched!  What happened?  Don’t you have a rain cover for your stroller?”  ”Yes”, I told her, “but I didn’t have it with me.” I stepped into the elevator, hoping the doors would close quickly and end our conversation.  Her reply, “Why not?  You should always have it with you!  I always keep mine in the basket underneath.  I hope she doesn’t get sick…” and the door shut.  This wasn’t the first time this mother had made me feel like I had messed up.  But when I looked down at my daughter, she was just smiling.  Maybe she likes the rain.

Mummy Goes Literary

Posted by: , April 28, 2009 in 5:19 pm

Every Thursday my street looks like a scene from the movie, ‘Pleasantville’.  The clock hits 7:30 p.m. and the front doors open.  Women stream out and converge together on sidewalks, calling out greetings.  Like clockwork the women on my street meet each week for ‘girls night out’.  Some of us are mothers, some of us are not.  All of us work either from home or outside of it and look forward to these weekly gatherings to keep our sanity in check through the use of laughter, wine and good food.

Recently though we decided to get literary. Our conversations were dwindling down to babies, spousal complaints and whatever trampy skanky mess had just occurred on a variety of the VH-1 program schedule.  We formed a book club.  Now in its second month and second book we have found that while we love the idea of the book club we are finding it hard to love or even like the books we have chosen.  Each time a member has chosen a book it seems to point out the differences that we have.

As we enter into our third month and book I find that with each book it not only helps me to get to know my friends a little bit deeper but it opens me up to a type of literature that I would never normally chose.  Once again it just proves that new experiences not only open up our minds and expand our lives but that friendships are constantly evolving too.

Let Earth Day 2009 Inspire You

Let Earth Day 2009 Inspire YouIf you are waiting for just the perfect opportunity for your family to begin going green, Earth Day is a great time to start.  The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 and organized by Senator Gaylord Nelson. Senator Nelson was dismayed that the deteriorating state of the environment was not even an issue in government. He helped coordinate a large grassroots movement to give people a better forum to express and act upon their concerns over the environment and Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22nd ever since. While Earth Day is a good launching point for environmental awareness, being more green should be a year round practice.

The World’s Worst Mommy

Posted by: royaldixie, April 27, 2009 in 5:40 pm

When my son was about 5 months old, he was just starting to roll over. Every morning I would bring him into bed with me and we would cuddle, read books and I would take some pictures of him. Well, I went to go and get my camera *like always* and he rolled off the bed! He screamed and screamed and I cried and cried. i felt like the world’s worst Mommy. Now that Dexter is a year old, he has hit his head more times than I care to admit. If I had known then what I know now, I am sure I would have still felt badly but I wouldn’t have beat myself up so much!

Timing is Everything

Posted by: Jessica Leigh Allen, April 27, 2009 in 5:07 pm

I remember standing at my kitchen sink swirling a Gerber bottle brush around and around, bottle after bottle, night after night.  I smile when I think about measuring out formula mix, making six 8 oz. bottles every night before I went to bed–knowing I would be awake in less than an hour to dispense the first of two nightly feedings.  There was a time when I felt like sobbing because it seemed like I would be cleaning and mixing and feeding forever.  And just as quickly…it ended.  I have been a mother for only four short years but I feel like I’ve witnessed a full lifetime of development.  When well-wishers declare, “Enjoy it now, they grow up so fast,” I don’t think any new parent can possibly comprehend the weight behind that statement.
