To me, the meaning of Valentine’s Day has morphed and changed over the years. From heart-shaped chocolate boxes and singing telegrams (I kid you not) to a bitter dismissal of it as a “Hallmark Holiday” to the current obligatory dinner out with my lovely husband at an over priced restaurant, the holiday seems an ever changing mirage. The only constant is that it is not a day that passes unnoticed. With another baby on the way it seems that perhaps the best way to celebrate love this year is to do something special with my daughter – of course I’m not one to pass up a fab dinner at a chic restaurant either.

“I am completely serious, take the trash can off your head now.”
We were staying in an ornate suite in the New York Palace Hotel, which contained a glass-shelved bar and lots of fussy, fragile knick-knacks. My eight year old daughter had decided it would be fun to put a wastebasket on her head – a wastebasket that God-knows-how-many strangers had dropped, blown, spat, or otherwise expelled God-knows-what into – and walk around, a veritable bowling ball in a $900/night-plus-damages bowling alley.
It wasn’t the first time I’d been amazed at the things I’d said in the interest of educating and protecting my children. “Don’t run with scissors”? “Don’t play with matches”? Those ordinary gems were for other moms. Moms with normal children.

This is embarassing…I never, ever hit my daughters. When my oldest was little, we were at the mall and she kept trying to stand in her stroller. I gently tapped her bottom and told her “no, sit down.” An old man started yelling at me for hitting my baby. I only tapped her. I almost started crying right there. I would never hit my baby. I couldn’t believe that man felt the need to accuse me in public. I felt horrible all night.

*To all of my lovely readers (I like pretending I have a whole flock of fans) please forgive the delay in writing!
I love browsing celebrity mom websites. The pages are full of photos of pretty, slim, fashionable moms who run businesses, act in movies, appear on Conan er, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and still have time to be caught by the paparazzi looking oh so casual chic (not to be confused with just plain “casual”) at the park with their kids.
