Family Vacation

Posted by: Kell Cahoon, February 28, 2010 in 11:59 am

Family VacationIt’s our oldest son’s first vacation.  We’re headed to Family Club Med Ixtapa, an all-inclusive resort on the fabulous Mexican Riviera.  As we pack the night before the trip, my wife, Debbie, is a little nervous about going to Mexico with a six month old baby.  I’m more nervous about who we’re going with.

Before I go on, let me be clear about something.  I love my wife’s family.  When I’m done, some of you may have the impression that I find them obnoxious, annoying, intrusive, irresponsible, ridiculous, baffoonish, drug-addled, and borderline insane.  And while technically this is true, they’re also some of the warmest, kindest, most fun-loving people you’d ever want to meet.

Come Arrest Me!

Posted by: BadMommy, February 28, 2010 in 9:51 am

Come Arrest Me!I pull up to the cleaners in my town and see that my 2 year old is sound asleep in the back. There is no way that I’m waking him up from the nap that will guarantee me two hours of peace. The store is inches from my car. I do the unthinkable. I leave him in his car seat for five minutes while I run in. As I hand off my pile of dry cleaning, I watch constantly to make sure that, no one is trying to break in and steal my child. Or more importantly that he doesn’t wake up and start screaming his head off, alerting a nearby officer of my indiscretion. I do my errand without a hitch and get back into the car. My son still sleeps soundly, apparently unaware his mother abandoned him.

I Can Only Make Ears

Posted by: , February 27, 2010 in 12:05 pm

Each time I’m pregnant it gets worse.  The “pregnancy brain” and its forgetfulness is much more apparent, my body grows more weary and I can do less and less at a time.  Gone are the long runs or even the short ones.  Dance Party USA with my two kids at our house becomes a distant memory.  That is unless I want to throw up for long periods of time afterwards. Thanks, but I’ll pass.  Someone else can run the dance party and tunes.

Swag Bag

Posted by: Gillian Garrett, February 27, 2010 in 11:26 am

Swag Bag‘Got my eyes on a hot new diaper bag!’  Well, that’s not something you hear every day.  But the new Swag Bag from JJ Cole is where diaper bag function FINALLY meets ‘I’ve-still -got-style’-fashion!

It’s so adorably chic that I tend to tote it out even when not toting my baby!  Since when can a diaper bag be so trendy?  In the past, I’ve always had to carry TWO bags- a nice handbag and a ‘diapery’ diaper bag.  Then, I would leave the car with one (forgetting either diapers, or my wallet depending upon which bagged I grabbed).   Or, even more annoying, sometimes I took both.

First Hard, Cold, Plastic Dose of Reality

First Hard, Cold, Plastic Dose of Reality (Or how I almost became the Mommy Police)

My church has a little nursery room Moms can escape to when the little ones are antsy or cranky, and my daughter, Eliza, was getting tired of being trapped inside the pew, so we went there. Already inside was a two year old girl, let’s call her… “Bolivia,”* and a 13 year old girl watching her. My daughter loves to make new friends, especially with kids about her size (my daughter is 14 months.) So, automatically, she just adored this Bolivia. All was going well, until my daughter found a toy in the toy box. Suddenly, Bolivia grabs the toy from Eliza, and hits her on the forehead with it. Now, my daughter is a tough toddler (by virtue of being a toddler), and she has a big brother, so she’s had her share of toys being snatched away and it usually doesn’t even phase her. But when this little girl she’d JUST MET attacked her unprovoked (and after we’d shared Eliza’s coloring book with her!!), it really threw Eliza for a loop.

Things I Thought About Kids Before I Became a Parent1. They slept a lot and late. I would get to wake THEM up and then relax on the bed for hours of parenting bliss.

2. They slept in their cribs OF COURSE. Where else?

3. They cooed.

4. They had teeth from the second they came out.

Kicking the Pacifier Habit

Kicking the Pacifier Habit

Sometimes the pacifier habit will phase out on its own.   But sometimes your kid is entering Kindergarten and people are giving you looks (no judgments here).  It’s time to bring in the big guns.  Getting your child to give up the pacifier without major drama can be quite a challenge.   Here are ten tips, which might make it easier.

Surely You Must Be Choking!

Posted by: Lenore Skenazy, February 22, 2010 in 11:10 am

Surely You Must Be Choking! There was an  AP story the other day about the American Academy of Pediatrics wanting companies to start labeling hotdogs, carrots, grapes and other foods as choking hazards.  Which, admittedly, they are. And sidewalks are tripping hazards, and puddles are slipping hazards, and trees are bumping-int0 hazards. The minute you decide to get up off the floor and sit on a chair (falling hazard) or couch (fire hazard) or go out the door (big, wide world-hazard) you are taking your life into your hands.

SuperMom Can Bite Me

Posted by: Frogmama, February 20, 2010 in 11:23 am

SuperMom Can Bite MeI was definitely not feeling pissy when I Googled the one term that, quite frankly, makes me nauseous. I was curious, is all. What are people saying about supermoms these days?

I was expecting cutesy articles about how to be a pretty, waif mom who is also a CEO who is also running her own business and growing her own organic vegetables. I was not expecting action figures.

But honk my hooters, there she was in all her glory: The SuperMom action figure.
