Buried Alive
My 5 year-old son had a turtle named Frankie who he adored. One day I went to Frankie’s cage and realized that Frankie was dead. My son was inconsolable. We buried him in the backyard in a big ceremony and I thought that was that. Two months later I saw my son and his friend digging in the backyard. I asked what they were doing and they said they were digging up Frankie. I demanded they stop immediately. The turtle deserved to be left in peace. I told my son if he dug him up he would be grounded.
A few days later, I spotted him trying to dig up Frankie again. I was furious but he insisted that Frankie was alive. I calmly explained that there was no way Frankie could be alive. He had been underground for two months without food or water. Besides, he was definitely dead when we buried him! My son was so persistent that I decided the only way to get him to give up this silly notion was to show him Frankie was in fact dead. We dug him up and I almost passed out. Frankie was alive and well. It turns out that Frankie was just hibernating! I was horrified. What kind of mother was I? I buried my son’s pet alive!!
