Homeschooling

Hello Readers! Hello? Helloooooooooooo? Drat. I was afraid this might have happened. You all jumped ship, didn’t you? Well, for the two or three of you (my relatives) who still stop in to read Musings of a Disobedient Mom, thank you! I really do have a legitimate reason for my gross lapse in posts. In fact, I could even provide you all with a real, illegible doctor’s excuse if you’d like… You see, I was diagnosed with breast cancer on August 17th. Shocking, right? Yea…you could have knocked me over with a feather. Let me briefly explain (and when I say briefly, I mean…thousands of words).

Baby Signs is?a book designed to teach specialized sign language used to communicate with infants and toddlers. ?While infants and toddlers have a desire to communicate their needs and wishes, they lack the ability to do so clearly because the production of speech lags behind cognitive ability in the first months and years of life.? Proponents of baby sign language say that this gap between desire to communicate and ability often leads to frustration and tantrums.? However, since?hand-eye coordination develops sooner than acquisition of verbal skills, infants can learn simple signs for common words such as “eat”, “sleep”, “more”, “hug”, “play”, “cookie”, “teddy bear”, before they are able to produce understandable speech.

…and a little bit rock & roll.
When I began homeschooling Benjamin, I unwittingly joined an online sub-community fueled by messageboards, forums and blogs. Homeschooling moms make up a huge portion of the Blogosphere, blogging about everything from dissecting a squirrel their son found dead in the backyard to the puzzle their three-year-old twins put together yesterday.

Benjamin and I just ate Hannah Montana macaroni and cheese. This is an exciting accomplishment seeing as how just a few short days ago he could not keep down even a slice of toast.
Yep. Christmas did not go well in the Allen household.
At 7:30 AM on Christmas Eve morning, I woke to Benjamin crying. When I arrived next to his Tonka truck-sheeted bed, he was gagging and choking. In an unsympathetic, half-slumber I grumbled, “Calm down. What is wrong?” I ushered him to the bathroom where the poor thing plopped down on his Baby Bjorn potty and proceeded to vomit into his own dinosaur underpants.
The whole scenario repeated itself at 8:30 AM.

Yesterday was one of those days. You know the kind? If I was not solely responsible for the well-being of my son I would have remained in bed.
You see, the day started off badly. My best friend called me on Monday evening and asked if she could stop Tuesday morning. She is my book mule for the Scholastic Book Club and I owe her some money for my October/November order. Shhhhh!

I’ll admit it! My name is Whitney and I’m a hovering mother. Yes, I’m one of those mothers most people laugh at in disgust before they have children of their own. I am the mother who gasped at every first step her child took, partially in joy and partially in complete fear my child would stumble to his early death. I am the mother who sat in the parking lot for four hours each day during the first week of preschool just “in case he needed me”. I am the mother who cried the first time my son stayed at his friend’s house all night without calling me at midnight. And, I am the mother who threatened to pull her child out of Kindergarten for homeschooling after his first two weeks because he “didn’t want to go to school”.
