Finding A Good School Fit The season for school tours is approaching. If you have a child who is entering kindergarten in 2009 and you are thinking of a magnet, charter or private school, this is the time to begin touring. Or perhaps you are like the vast majority of parents, and want to make sure your child will be OK in your local school.  As a mother of three kids, I have been on many tours. At times, I would find myself wondering WHY am I on this tour, anyway?  Here is a list of things to keep in mind and to help you avoid the “why” pitfall

Snow Day Mix Up

Posted by: Bad Mommy, January 18, 2009 in 11:31 pm

Last week I didn’t get the phone call that school was cancelled.  Or maybe I just slept through it.  Not sure. Either way, I didn’t know!  There wasn’t that much snow so I thought nothing of it.  I packed the kids in the car and drove to school.  When I got to the school, it seemed eerily quiet.  I waited…and waited… and waited. Thought I must have gotten their earlier and then checked the clock.  Nope.  School should have started!  I called a friend to confirm.  It was a Snow Day!  I drove the kids back home and we all put our pajamas on and pretended it never happened!

I Resolve to Buy More Resolve

Benjamin and I just ate Hannah Montana macaroni and cheese.  This is an exciting accomplishment seeing as how just a few short days ago he could not keep down even a slice of toast.

Yep.  Christmas did not go well in the Allen household.

At 7:30 AM on Christmas Eve morning, I woke to Benjamin crying.  When I arrived next to his Tonka truck-sheeted bed, he was gagging and choking.  In an unsympathetic, half-slumber I grumbled, “Calm down.  What is wrong?”  I ushered him to the bathroom where the poor thing plopped down on his Baby Bjorn potty and proceeded to vomit into his own dinosaur underpants.

The whole scenario repeated itself at 8:30 AM.

Private School Pricklies

Posted by: pj, October 30, 2008 in 7:03 pm

I have been obsessing about getting my 3-year old into private school.  Driving my husband crazy, annoying my friends, having sleepless nights.  Basically all of the crazy cliches you’ve heard of.  Well, it was the night before one of our big interviews and I decided to make salmon for dinner.  MY daughter didn’t want to eat it but I made her it even though she didn’t want to.  That night she broke out in hives!  I had no idea she was allergic.  Luckily it didn’t affect her throat or anything serious but her entire face broke out and she was scratching all night.  The next morning not only was she exhausted, but one of her eyes was almost swollen shut.  She looked awful.  I made an early doctor’s appointment and pumped her with Benadryl.  I of course tried to reschedule the interview with no success.  At the interview she was a nightmare, irritable and scary looking.  My husband told me it served me right for getting too caught up in the competition.  I didn’t want that school anyway:)

This Early Bird Got The Shaft

Yesterday was one of those days.  You know the kind?  If I was not solely responsible for the well-being of my son I would have remained in bed.

You see, the day started off badly.  My best friend called me on Monday evening and asked if she could stop Tuesday morning.  She is my book mule for the Scholastic Book Club and I owe her some money for my October/November order.  Shhhhh!

Is Homeschooling As Bad As They Say?

Posted by: Whitney Acke, October 2, 2008 in 10:07 am

Is Homeschooling As Bad As They Say?I’ll admit it! My name is Whitney and I’m a hovering mother. Yes, I’m one of those mothers most people laugh at in disgust before they have children of their own. I am the mother who gasped at every first step her child took, partially in joy and partially in complete fear my child would stumble to his early death. I am the mother who sat in the parking lot for four hours each day during the first week of preschool just “in case he needed me”. I am the mother who cried the first time my son stayed at his friend’s house all night without calling me at midnight. And, I am the mother who threatened to pull her child out of Kindergarten for homeschooling after his first two weeks because he “didn’t want to go to school”.

Avoiding Back-to-School Panic

Posted by: Lisa Dawson, August 30, 2008 in 8:36 am

Avoiding Back to School PanicEmily Pancer remembers how hectic the week before school was last year. “It was total chaos trying to get my three kids ready for the first day of school while juggling a busy time at work,” explained the owner of Heavenly Cupcakes, a specialty cupcake supplier from Tenafly, NJ. “I remember a lot of running around, driving from store to store looking for school supplies all while trying to fill orders and take calls in-between.”

Buying School Supplies

Posted by: honestbaby, August 15, 2008 in 4:12 pm

Buying School SuppliesIt’s that time of year again.  School is around the corner and parents need to arm their children with pencils, pens, binders, folders, rulers, glue, backpacks, paper…the list seems endless.  But if parents are organized, they can make a daunting task fun while keeping costs down.  Here are some helpful tips:

1. Start with a list.  It can be overwhelming to walk into a store without preparation.  The best list is obviously one from the school.  Before you go make sure to check and see what you have at home already.
