“Junior, this is Gossie. This is Gert—”
“—Is that Gertie? Where’s his body?”
“—It’s drawn off the page.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know, sweetie. Artistic license. Gossie wears bright red boots. Gertie wears—”

I first became acquainted with this awesome line of books when my best friend sent my daughter one for her first birthday. It has been my go-to gift ever since. I am a total sucker for personalized gifts – be they placemats, lunch boxes, or in this case, storybooks.

Pacify Me is a hilarious book that sometimes made me pee in my diaper…I mean pants. Becoming a first time father makes most men a tad nervous. Chris Mancini, a real, down to earth – not to mention hysterically funny comedian and dad, tells it like it is! And, he tells it in a lighthearted, relaxed, REAL voice that made me tear through the book smiling and relating. And honestly, it helped me chill the f out a little (which I totally needed, by the way).

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE MOUSE KING
On Christmas Eve, Godfather Drosselmeier has arrived with gifts of marvel and enchantment for his young godchildren. Goddaughter Marie falls in love a bewitching nutcracker doll and claims him as her own. Yet when the clock strikes midnight, something terribly amazing happens to Godfather’s handcrafted toys…they come alive. Marie is swept off her feet on an incredible journey with the Nutcracker in this astonishing classic story by E.T.A. Hoffman. Critically acclaimed artist Gail de Marcken’s stunning illustrations bring this spellbinding tale to life.
THE CHRISTMAS MAGIC
Far, far North, when the nights are longest and the stars shine brightest, Santa begins to prepare for his big night of giving. He gathers his reindeer, feeds them parsnips and berries, and polishes his bells and his sled. Then lovingly, he chooses toys for every child in the world. For Santa loves them all, and he knows what each child at heart wants most. Then, with the thrum of magic that makes reindeers fly, he spreads the Christmas joy and warmth throughout the world–as he always has — and always will until the end of time. From best-selling author Lauren Thomas, and Caldecott Honor Artist Jon J Muth.

So my daughter is in the 2nd grade and one of the things they do in her class is called Snack-Story Time. Parents are supposed to pick a story, a snack and a day to come to the class to read that story and then administer the snack to the children. The hook is that if possible, you should pick a story that will tie into the snack of choice, as to make it more of an interactive experience. Sounds like fun! I obviously love stories and judging by the red indentations from my skin tight jeans, where my waistline used to be, I love snacks as well.

Did you mistakenly believe that the Baby Einstein videos would make your baby smarter? No need to answer the question. Disney is assuming that you did and is now offering REFUNDS! If you’ve purchased a Baby Einstein DVD any time in the last five years, you’re entitled to a full refund. Yup, you can thank the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood which put pressure on Disney to stop claiming the Baby Einstein Videos were educational for infants.
Go to Disney’s Baby Einstein Website to find out how to get your money back, or trade in for a book or CD of your choice. We have no bone to pick with the Baby Einstein videos as entertainment, our kids loved them, but don’t love the deceptive advertising. It’s nice that they’re making up for it.

Begin Smart Books, created by former teacher Harriet Ziefert, is designed to encourage the physical, social, emotional and intellectual growth of babies and toddlers. Begin Smart is not just another book program. It addresses children’s need to take in information though all of their senses – eyes, ears, fingers, mouths and noses – and to manipulate objects as much as possible.
This book program is separated by age – newborn to 6 months, 6 to 12 months, 12 to 18 months and 18 to 24 months so it helps parents make sense of the disordered array of reading choices they often face in the marketplace. Begin Smart is a gift of learning—not only for children under three, but also for parents.
FACEBOOK CONTEST: Tune into the honestbaby Facebook Fan Page to win a Begin Smart book this week!

My partner loves her Bugaboo. I’ve hated it since the day we got it. It’s easy to hate. After you buy the rain cover and the car seat attachment and the mosquito net and the Breezy Sun Canopy and the parasol and the Snuggly Foot Muff and the latte cup holder and the grocery bag hook and the custom diaper bag and the Transport Bag, it tops out at well over a thousand dollars. A thousand dollars for a stroller. My first car cost me less than that. And try to get the thing into the trunk of a taxi while cars pile up behind you on a busy street.
