Comic Con’s FREE Kids Day!
When used together, “kids” and “free” are two words that are magic to the ears of every parent, especially these days. And when they apply to a full day of fun, it is not to be ignored lightly.
NY Comic Con, the annual convention for comic book fans and movie and television genre enthusiasts of all sorts, comes to town in early February and they have set aside a day to focus on their youngest fans under the banner of Kids Day. Best of all, children 12 years of age and under will be admitted free.Along with the comic book and merchandise marketplace, the convention offers a host of workshops, screenings, lectures, giveaways and special events specifically designed for young fans.
Disney XD, the new cable network debuting on February 13th, will provide an advance screening of their first original series, AARON STONE, the story of a young video game wiz who becomes a real life counterpart to his crime-fighting online avatar.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be on hand for photographs, autographs, a martial arts display and free giveaways.
The CW will present a sneak peek at future episodes of their Saturday morning series KAMEN RIDER: DRAGON KNIGHT.
The Electric Company cast will be putting on a live show filled with music and a strong, positive message about literacy. In addition, the Electric Co. Stick Puppet Players will provide a how-to primer for making your own stick puppet segment for the show.
The author of Pigeon Wants A Puppy, Mo Willems, will give a lesson on how to draw his award winning character as well as read from his new book.
Jeff Kinney, author of the bestselling ”Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, will appear to launch the latest entry in the series- “The Last Straw”. He will talk about his books and take questions from the audience.
The creator of “Pinky Dinky Doo”, Jim Jinkins, will be a guest to discuss this book series and television show along with the nature of creativity and storytelling.
Author Josh Elder will lead an audience read-along of his new graphic novel “Mail Order Ninja”.
Manga fans and budding artists can get a lesson in Japanese cartooning from Manga creator Misako Rocks!
“The Looking Glass Wars” writer Frank Beddor will speak about his book series and present a trailer for the upcoming movie.
Lightsaber training will be available to Star Wars fans 12 and under, thanks to on-site Jedi instructors who will teach basic lightsaber choreography.
An interactive reading adventure will be provided by Graphics Universe with the presentation of two of their “Twisted Universe” stories- “Kung Fu Masters” and “The Goblin King” – as the audience gets to pick the plot twists.
Star of Sci-Fi Channel’s WHO WANTS TO BE A SUPER HERO?, Fat Momma will be on hand to talk about self-esteem and dealing with schoolyard bullies.
Make sure your little one shows up as their own super hero or favorite character in order to enter into the Official Kids Costume Contest. Convention organizers promise that everyone in this contest is a winner.
NY Comic Con is taking place February 6-8, 2009 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. Kids Day is Sunday, Feb. 8th with all kids aged 12 and under admitted free (don’t forget to bring proof of age). Sunday tickets for adults are $30 each (pre-registration strongly suggested).
