Ma’am, is this your child?!

The other day I was sitting at the school playground, looking through my 1st grader’s overflowing backpack filled with homework, graded work, and the bright pink “Girl Scout Cookie Money is Due Today!” reminders, relaxing a little because my 5-week old was cozy and asleep in the stroller, my two year old was happily tummy swinging with the big kids, and the sun was actually out!

All of a sudden I look up to see the YMCA after school program leader (who is NOT that much younger than I am, by the way) carrying my son towards me with a determined stomp in her step. Crap.

“Ma’am, is this your child?!”

How wrong would it be for me to say no?

“Yes, he’s mine.”

“Well, I just caught him going out the gate! I had to go and get him!”

Crap, crap.

“Thank you. I appreciate it.” I said, taking my laughing two-year old out of her arms.

“He could have gotten hit by a car!” She said, before turning and stomping away.

Just another day!
