TFF: Tribeca Film is also The Family FestivalEach year since it was founded by Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal in 2002, the Tribeca Film Festival has branched out further and further to all the neighborhoods of New York, from Tribeca to the Upper West Side and now it continues its expansion as the most family friendly of the premiere international film festivals.

Featuring short films, documentaries and feature films, both old and new, the TFF has carved out a special place in their event for families that want to explore cinema.  Festival programmers put together an eclectic presentation of films for and about families:Racing Dreams, documents the journey of three youth during one season as they vie to be the national go-kart champion.

Small Change , a short film in competition, uses the Tooth Fairy as a metaphor in the story of a six year old girl dealing with the departure of her mother.

Geena Davis stars in Accidents Happen, a drama that examines the dysfuntional Conway family.

In the film equivalent of an experimental poem, the docudrama Antoine wraps an inspirational story around the five year old star Antoine Houang, blind from birth but not even remotely handciapped by it.

And the Tribeca Drive-In, the festival’s popular outdoor screening series, is featuring the 1990 kids classic teenage Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Not content to leave the kids just up on the screen, the TFF has reached out to the Tribeca neighborhood kids and cast them in the role of reporters covering the event via Tribeca Kids Access.  Local school kids are put on the front lines to bring their perspective to us.

The tentpole attraction of the TFF is Family Festival Street Fair, an all day celebration that takes over Greenwich Street.  Live performances and music combine with interactive arts & crafts, a marketplace filled with educational goodness and all the food and refreshments that you could want.  The Street Fair has been a city-wide favorite destination for families since it began and is likely to only be bigger and better this year.

Mark Saturday, May 2nd down on your calendar and set aside some time between 10 AM and 6 PM for the Street Fair.

The Film Festival runs from April 22nd to May 2nd and ticket packages are available now an single event ticket sales begin April 20th (American Express cardholders can order ickets starting on April 14th).
